Deauville, The french para-dressage show case

Horses and riders bought a musical end to the 8th CPEDI*** at Deauville with the Freestyle. Great Britain, a leading para-equestrian dressage nation, incontestably dominated classes today by claiming the top spot in three out of the five grades thanks to the superb performances of Sophie Christiansen in Grade I, Heather Bennett in Grade IV and Sophie Wells in Grade V.

The latter was yet again the top performing rider in the show, a title which in the past has given her individual gold medals at the Rio Paralympic Games, the World Equestrian Games at Lexington and the European Championships at Göteborg.
It’s a real pleasure to welcome the World’s best to the CPEDI*** of Deauville”, commented Eric Estrier, Chairman of the Handi Equi’ Compet association and show President, “the British haven’t missed a year and have won every Nations Cup since 2012 ! The Dutch, Belgians and French are never far behind, which creates a real competition. The chefs d’équipe choose Deauville as they know that it will very competitive, that the jury is first class and the results will allow riders to measure how they stand at international level. It’s a really good edition, the technical aspects never cease to improve and the quality of the horses doesn’t compare with 2011, the riders are now all well equipped. I would really like to warmly thank the Minister of Sport, Laura Flessel for honouring us with her presence on Friday, it’s great publicity for the discipline and for para-equestrian sport in general. A huge thank you to the organising team and to all the volunteers also, who have unfailingly worked to make this 2018 CPEDI a huge success!

GRADE V : SOPHIE WELLS & C FATAL ATTRACTION DANCING AT THE TOP
With 76.047% in the Team Test and 77.833% in the Individual Test, Sophie Wells (GB) had already imposed her supremacy over the other competitors, but by passing the 80% mark in the Freestyle today (80.525%), the rider showed that she masterly reigns over the Grade V. A breathtaking test on her fabulous 2017 European Championships partner, C Fatal Attraction. The Belgian pair, Ciska Vermeulen/ Rohmeo took second place with a score of 73.050% followed by the Australian Amelia White and  Lotus 253 who scored 69.875%.

GRADE IV : THE REVELATION, HEATHER BENNETT
3rd in the Team Test (69.675%) and Individual Test (70.415%), Heather Bennett (GB) gave one of the best performances of her career putting her name at the top of the score board in the Grade IV Freestyle above two huge names in the discipline, her compatriot Isobelle Palmer and Frenchman  José Letartre. Partnering the KWPN mare Zavailantika whom she has ridden since 2013, she left the arena with a really good 73,450% and a 1 point lead on her young teammate who was riding  Touchdown M (72.400%), and the number one French para-equestrian dressage rider (72%).

GRADE II : 3rd VICTORY FOR NICOLE DEN DULK AND THE NETHERLANDS
Not content to with already having won the first two classes at the Normandy CPEDI, Nicole Den Dulk was awarded 76.067% for her really good and enjoyable test on her Paralympic horse Wallace N.O.P. A regular at this show since 2013, the Dutch rider managed to just stay ahead of the rider who has won more than 30 gold medals for Great Britain, the incredible Lee Pearson ! Returning with Zion, he proved that he is definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the months to come by climbing for a 3rd time onto the podium with a score of 75.733%. His teammate Georgia Wilson on Chico III followed with a test that achieved 72.300%.

GRADE III : HAT TRICK FOR DEMI VERMEULEN
Little change in the Grade III, as the podium was identical to Friday’s Team Test. Just like her compatriot Nicole Den Dulk,  Demi Vermeulen (NED) took control at this CPEDI by winning each of her classes. Awarded 75.033%, the rider, piloting the extremely good Ciska II, had a big lead over the other competitors. Belgian Barbara Minneci/Stuart, elegantly riding side saddle throughout the meeting was second with 69.333 %, TSANG Tin Chi Timothy, 3rd, scored 61.883%.

GRADE I : AMAZING SOPHIE, AMAZING ROMANCE!
With 3 competitors in the starting blocks in this Grade, including the British multi-medallist Sophie Christiansen (GBR), the game was “nearly” played before it started. Although bringing a new ride, Amazing Romance, a novice at international level, and so leaving a possibility for her rivals to slip through the door, the rider had left nothing to chance. With careful planning and hard training since last September, with the Deauville CPEDI***,  and above all the World Equestrian Games at Tryon in mind, she effortlessly led the dance, straight to the top of the placings. Awarded a final score of 78.067%, she was nearly 10 points ahead of Frenchman Thibault Stoclin/ Uniek*HEC (68%) and Pui Ting Natasha TSE/Baxo, riding for Hong-Kong (67.300%)
