CPEDI Deauville 2018 : The 11 best nations expected !

For the 8th edition, 43 couples from 11 nations will be embarking upon three days of competition punctuated by the Nations Cup – celebrated after the Team Test and Individual Test – and the Freestyles.

From the 6th to the 8th of April, the Worlds’ elite of para-equestrian dressage will be at the “Pôle International du Cheval” for the Deauville CPEDI***, organised by Handi Equi’ Compet, it’s the only international para-equestrian dressage show in France. For the 8th edition, 43 couples from 11 nations will be embarking upon three days of competition punctuated by the Nations Cup – celebrated after the Team Test and Individual Test – and the Freestyles (freestyle tests to music).

Unbeaten in Nations Cups since 2012, Great Britain will again be looked upon as the favourites. Amongst the 8 British riders entered are notably, Sophie Wells (Grade V) and Sophie Christiansen (Grade I), both team and individual gold medal winners at the 2016 Paralympic games held at Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Alongside them, the Grade II individual Paralympic champion, Lee Pearson, making his big comeback after being absent for more than a year.

On the heels of Great Britain in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Netherlands are back again this year with their best athletes, amongst others, Nicole Den Dulk (Grade II) and Demi Vermeulen (Grade III), both team bronze medallists at the last Paralympic Games.

On the third step of the podium last year, France will be the most represented nation with 10 couples. Synonymous with start of the international season, the CPEDI of Deauville is a key step for the home nation riders, whose major objective this season will be the World Equestrian Games at Tryon (United States), in September. In addition to José Letartre (Swing Royal*ENE-HN and RichardZ du Loing), Vladimir Vinchon (Tarantino Fleuri) and Camille Jaguelin (Wimke) in Grade IV, or Thibault Stoclin (Uniek*HDC) in Grade I to name but them, Fanny Delaval’s team will also be able to count on the experienced Céline Gerny. The Grade II rider will be competing, for the very first time at an international show, with Vol de Nuit de Brève*ENE-HN. The 9 year-old mare has been lent to Céline since last October by Nadèje Bourdon, a rider at the “École Nationale d’Équitation”.

3 questions for Céline Gerny

- What are your objectives at the 2018 Deauville CPEDI*** ?
First show of the season, the CPEDI of Deauville is an important competition. It will allow us to situate ourselves in relation to the other competitors, see how the mare behaves and if she is liked by the judges. There are still a lot of questions. Deauville will really decide the objectives for our season, to know : if we try to be selected for the World Equestrian Games at Tryon or wait a year, so as not to rush things. The CPEDI of Deauville will be only our second show together and our rst international. We’ve had an encouraging start, but there’s still a lot of things to sort out. I’m not as precise as her regular rider, Nadèje, and I’m still learning to trust the mare. We’re working towards the future and for major events like the World Equestrian Games and the Paralympic Games. Vol de Nuit de Brève*ENE-HN is nicely put together and looks good. She’s got every quality needed to do well in my grade.

- How would you describe this unique CPEDI in France ?

I really enjoy the CPEDI of Deauville as it’s at home, and is a very well orchestrated show where it’s like being in a cocoon. We know the team that organises it really well, its reassuring. Handi Equi’ Compet is used to para-equestrian dressage and the infrastructures are perfect. By going to Deauville, we’ve no doubts: everything will be ne ! With Team France, we also have the opportunity, in the days leading up to the CPEDI, to take part in a training course being held on the “Pôle International du Cheval” site. The horses will thus have time to get properly acclimatised and into the swing of things.

- Each year you meet pupils from neighbouring schools, for “Scholars day”.
Why do these meetings mean so much to you ?

Being myself a primary school teacher, I nd it’s great that the schools come to the CPEDI. It’s important that children are not frightened of disability and that they can put words on it. I’m rather militant about the integration of disabled persons into society. It’s also for that reason that I wanted to become a teacher: to show children that it’s normal to come across people with disability and that it’s part of life. The younger they meet it, the more normal it becomes for them. It’s important to talk to them, especially at Deauville, where a lot of children already ride. It only remains to present the disability and to explain that even with it, it’s possible to ride a horse. The teachers also invest heavily and the children arrive with questions prepared beforehand in the classroom. The discussions are particularly rich and I’m pleased to share my experiences.
