Great-Britain takes the lead at Deauville !

Follow the news and results of the 2016 CPEDI*** of Deauville

The annual Deauville CPEDI***, organised by Handi Equi’ Compet , started this Friday, April the 8th. The 71 competitors who have come from all over the globe to compete in the big indoor arena at the Pôle International du Cheval at Deauville, are hoping to show the full extent of their talent and ability, but above all, head the leader board in their respective grade in one of the individual classes as well as a team member in the Nations Cup competition. The ultimate goal ? Rio’s Paralympics : a dream already well under way for certain, but some others are still seeking that qualifying score. Riders, grooms, trainers, and the public have been holding their breath since 8 o’clock this morning.

GRADE III RIDERS LAUNCHED THE COMPETITION

It was the Grade IIIs that officially launched this 6th edition of the renowned Deauville para-dressage competition. More than 25 started the Grade III, a first in a CPEDI***. Not easy to stand out from the crowd !
Philippa Johnson-Dwyer (RSA) riding her 11 years old gelding, Lord Louis, took the top position in this first class of the week end festivities with a high scoring test of 71.289 %. Excellent performances  from Australia represented by Katie Umback and the Netherlands, represented by Lotte Krijnsen who rode tests scoring 70,553% and 69,263% respectively taking the second and third places on the podium.

SOPHIE WELLS DOUBLE WINNER IN GRADE IV

In the Grade IV Team Test, it wasn’t really a surprise that Sophie Wells seized both the first and second slots with her two rides. The British champion who was victorious a few months ago at Slapton - Bury Farm CPEDI*** gave two lovely performances, the first with Valerius scoring 72.738 % and the second with C Fatal Attraction scoring 72.571 %. Denmark took the last step on the podium thanks to the performance of Line Kongensgaard and her regular ride Laponio with whom she has competed on the international circuit since 2013.

SOPHIE CHRISTIANSEN OR THE BRITISH SUPREMACY

The afternoon kicked off under the Deauville sun with the Grade Ia riders. Spectators were able to admire the test of Sophie Christiansen who took command of this class. The world number one, partnering Athene Lindebjerg, representing Great Britain showed yet again the extent of their talent and complicity scoring 74.913 %.
Laurentia Tan and her horse Ruben James 2 offered the second place to Singapore scoring 72.826 %. Remember that this pair took bronze during the World Equestrian Games in 2014.
The judges also appreciated the test of the well known British rider Anne Dunham with her 15 year old stallion LJT Lucas Normark who finished third. The pair had already shown what they are capable of by taking silver in the Freestyle during the European Championships hosted here last year.

FIRST TIME IN DEAUVILLE AND TOP POSITION FOR ESTÉE GUERRITSEN

The nine starters from eight different nations in the Grade Ib evolved under the attentive eyes of a jury who attributed scores ranging from 55.520 % to 73.680 %. For her first visit to the Pôle International du cheval at Deauville and her first ever CPEDI***, it was Estée Gerritsen representing The Netherlands who imposed herself in the final outcome of this class riding the very experienced Exquis Onassis, scoring 73.680 %. A pair to follow very closely !  World number 3, Pepo Puch (AUT) followed with his gelding Fontainenoir obtaining a score of 72.840 %. The third place on the podium was occupied by another member of the strong Dutch contingent present, thanks to the performance of Nicole Den Dulk and Faust who obtained a score of 70.320 %.

THRILLING CONCLUSION FOR THE NETHERLANDS

The Grade II Team Test brought to a close the first day here at the Deauville CPEDI*** and it was the gold medallist at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and last year’s European Championships who took the class with a score of 71.265 %. The USA and Rebecca Hart crept in and seized the second place. The winner of the Wellington CPEDI*** last January is riding this weekend Schroeters Romani. The Netherlands who are already making their presence felt  were yet again on the podium with a third place by Demi Vermeulen on her new ride Burberry.
